  5. Lay out three pieces of bread, spread a thin layer of the mayo on one piece and top with a slice of cheese and then a slice of turkey (I used several slices because I used thinly sliced). For the second piece of bread spread on a little more of the mayo mixture and top with another slice of turkey and place another slice of cheese on top and place the 3rd piece of bread on top of that to form the sandwich.(do not skip the last slice of cheese it is needed to hold the sandwich together when the cheese melts).

  8. In a nonstick skillet over medium high heat melt the butter along with the oil. Dip each side of the sandwich in the egg mixture like you are making french toast. Place in the skillet and cook until golden brown, flip, and continue cooking until nicely browned and cheese is melted.

Grilled Cheese with Smoked Ham and Swiss Recipe

Grilled Cheese with smoked ham and swiss

This is a great sandwich to put on the menu for lunch or supper. The original recipe adapted from a Wisconsin cheese web site referred to this grilled cheese as the Dagwood. I had to go back in my memory quite a ways to remember Dagwood, so I did not think the name would relate real well with the current generation so I renamed the recipe; Grilled Cheese with Smoked Ham and Swiss. I love making grilled cheese sandwiches because there are so many combinations of ingredients that can be used – the next time you’re in the mood for grilled cheese sandwiches put this one on the menu; you’ll love it.

Serves: Makes 4
Ingredients
  • 9 Tablespoons of soft bread butter or butter flavored margarine
  • 1 large sweet onion (sliced thinly about ⅛ inch thick)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 8 slices of white bread
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 ounces smoked ham
  • 2 large tomatoes (sliced)
Instructions
  1. In a skilled melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the onion slices, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, over medium high heat until onion slices start to brown. Remove the onion slices from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Butter the 8 slices of bread on one side, and set aside. Heat a skillet or electric griddle to medium heat (300F for griddle seems to work fine for me). Place a slice of bread butter side down in the skillet and then top with 1 slice of American cheese, 1 slice of Swiss cheese, 2 ounces ham, about 1 slice of the onion, 2 slices of tomato, and then another slice of American cheese. Place another slice of bread on top buttered side up; repeat the process for the other 3 sandwiches. Cook the sandwiches until golden brown – turn the sandwich and cook the other side until golden brown and cheese has melted.
