If the pecans you bought are unshelled, they’re likely to be old. They’re best when still in the shells, as they have a longer shelf life. Unshelled pecans can last anywhere from four to one year in the fridge or two to four years in the freezer. Alternatively, you can shell the pecans and check if they’re wrong or not.
A bad pecan should have no cracks in its shell and should be fresh and unshelled. If you notice a hole or a shriveled nut, discard it. If the unshelled nuts have no shell, they’re probably rotten.
