Grilled Cheese with Smoked Ham and Swiss Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 Tablespoons of soft bread butter or butter flavored margarine
  • 1 large sweet onion (sliced thinly about 1/8 inch thick)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 8 slices of white bread
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 ounces smoked ham
  • 2 large tomatoes (sliced)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the onion slices, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, over medium-high heat until onion slices start to brown. Remove the onion slices from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Butter the 8 slices of bread on one side, and set aside. Heat a skillet or electric griddle to medium heat (300F for griddle seems to work fine for me).
  3. Place a slice of bread butter side down in the skillet and then top with 1 slice of American cheese, 1 slice of Swiss cheese, 2 ounces ham, about 1 slice of the onion, 2 slices of tomato, and then another slice of American cheese.
  4. Place another slice of bread on the top buttered side up; repeat the process for the other 3 sandwiches.
  5. Cook the sandwiches until golden brown – turn the sandwich and cook the other side until golden brown and cheese have melted.
