9 Tablespoons of soft bread butter or butter flavored margarine
1 large sweet onion (sliced thinly about 1/8 inch thick)
Salt
Pepper
8 slices of white bread
8 slices American cheese
4 slices Swiss cheese
8 ounces smoked ham
2 large tomatoes (sliced)
Instructions
In a skillet melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the onion slices, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, over medium-high heat until onion slices start to brown. Remove the onion slices from the skillet and set aside.
Butter the 8 slices of bread on one side, and set aside. Heat a skillet or electric griddle to medium heat (300F for griddle seems to work fine for me).
Place a slice of bread butter side down in the skillet and then top with 1 slice of American cheese, 1 slice of Swiss cheese, 2 ounces ham, about 1 slice of the onion, 2 slices of tomato, and then another slice of American cheese.
Place another slice of bread on the top buttered side up; repeat the process for the other 3 sandwiches.
Cook the sandwiches until golden brown – turn the sandwich and cook the other side until golden brown and cheese have melted.
