What is the Nispero Fruit?
The nispero, also known as the loquat, is a fruit grown in Asia for thousands of years. The loquat was brought to Spain by sailors who stopped in ports in the Valencia region about 2,000 years ago. However, it wasn’t grown there or anywhere else in the Mediterranean until the 19th century. The loquat tree grows well in places where citrus trees do, so the warm coastal areas of the Mediterranean are a great place for it. Spain is the only country in Europe that makes the most loquat.
