What is Shepherd’s Pie?

Cottage pie, also called shepherd’s pie, has English roots. A layer of mashed potatoes is placed on top of a savory pie made of ground red meat (typically either ground lamb or ground beef) in a vegetable gravy sauce. It is possible to use freshly minced meat or previously cooked meat.

Lamb or beef are the most common meats. Since the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the two English terms first appeared, they have been used synonymously, despite some writers’ insistence that a shepherd’s pie should contain lamb or mutton and a cottage pie, beef.

How to Make Easy Shepherd’s Pie?

  • One teaspoon salt, plus additional salt to taste
  • Three large (1 1/2 to 2 pound) peeled and quartered potatoes
  • 8 tbsp (1 pound) butter, divided
  • One medium chopped onion (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1–2 cups mixed vegetables (diced carrots, corn, or peas)
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef round
  • half a cup of beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Pepper and other desired seasonings

  1. The potatoes are boiled: Put the quartered and peeled potatoes in a medium pot. Add at least an inch of cold water on top. Add a pinch of salt. Heat until boiling, then reduce the heat and simmer until soft (about 20 minutes).
  2. Warm up the oven: Set the oven to 400°F.
  3. Make the vegetables sauté: Melt four tablespoons of the butter in a sizable sauté pan over medium heat as the potatoes cook—Cook the chopped onions for 6 to 10 minutes or until they are tender. Vegetables should be added following their cooking time if you include them. Since carrots take just as long to cook, they should be prepared alongside the onions. Since peas and corn require very little cooking time, add them after the onions are finished cooking or once the meat has begun to cook.
  4. Add the Worcestershire sauce and broth after the ground beef: In the pan with the onions and vegetables, add the ground beef. Cook until the pink is gone. Drain any extra fat from the pan (more than one tablespoon). Add salt and pepper to taste. Beef broth and Worcestershire sauce should be added. Simmer the broth for a while, then turn down the heat. Cook for 10 minutes with the lid off, adding more beef broth as needed to prevent the meat from drying. Once the filling has been cooked, give it a taste to see if more Worcestershire, salt, or other seasonings are necessary.
  5. The cooked potatoes are mashed: Remove them from the pot and store them in a pan with the remaining four tablespoons of butter when fully cooked (a fork can be inserted easily). Use a fork or potato masher to mash, then taste and add salt and pepper as needed taste.
  6. In a casserole dish, layer mashed potatoes and the meat mixture: Spread the prepared filling in an equal layer in a big baking dish, like a 9 x 13-inch casserole. Spread the mashed potatoes over top of the ground beef. To create peaks that will be well-browned, roughen the mashed potatoes’ surface with a fork. Even mashed potatoes can be decorated artistically with the use of a fork.
  7. Cook in an oven: Cook for 30 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until bubbling and browned. To help the top of the mashed potatoes brown, broil for the final few minutes. (Do not worry if you’re using a ceramic or metal casserole dish; Pyrex and glass dishes have been known to break when placed in the broiler’s intense heat).
